During the 1600s, the Dutch became Europe's leaders in horticulture and exotic flowers which led to the rise in appreciation of floral still lifes. Ambrosius Bosschaert was the first Dutch painter that specialized in fruit and floral paintings. Bosschaert's works have been noted as flower portraits, each flower receives the same detailed attention as a face in a portrait. He was one of the first to establish floral still lifes as a genre on its own.
